It was simple and easy to buy tickets with headout. The instructions for the meeting point were very specific and easy to follow. The tour guide was lovely and very knowledgeable. I would recommend this tour in particular because the views from the bus were stunning and the combination of visiting Linderhof and Neuschwanstein was definitely worth it, both were stunning. The bus left at 0900 and was a couple of hours to Linderhof palace. We were given some time to admire the grounds before the tour started. It's a small palace but makes up for it in beauty on the inside, the ammount of marble and ornate decorations was impressive. We then got back on the bus and drove another hour to Hohenschwangau, the town where Neuschwanstein is. When we arrived we were given our tickets and time for our tour, we had a few hours to explore the town and get some lunch. The tour was wonderful and we were given an audio guide to listen to the information about each room. After the tour we got back on the bus to Munich and were dropped off at around 1900

I felt that the price for admission was very expensive for what I had got. The audio guide was very nice to have while going through each room, however I was disappointed with the lack of rooms. With a price as high as it was, I would have expected to tour the whole entire castle. I understand the castle's interior is incomplete, but I just can't understand how the price for admission equates what the experience in it's entirety was. I toured some other castles prior to my visit to Neuschwanstein, and those castles had a lower price of admission and complete interiors to tour. I can only see myself returning to Neuschwanstein in the future with my wife, or to just go and see the lovely woman who worked at the shop just outside. Otherwise I can't see myself returning again.

My mom (80 years old) and I arrived at the castle a little later than our scheduled appointment due to parking and bus travel, but we were very kindly let in and were able to visit the castle. Everything was very well organized. The castle is a special experience. We are lucky to have such a work of art in Germany.

Very well organized. Unfortunately, there is no clear description of the procedure and so we were very stupid at first. But thanks to the help of a woman from the security service, it worked out. We were joined by other older visitors who had also booked online. Question: Why did I pay 84 euros for 2 tickets when the ticket price there is 21 euros?

I would like to share my overall very positive experience with this tour. Particular praise goes to the guide: she proved to be extremely knowledgeable, providing interesting and detailed information, and at the same time, she was exceptionally courteous throughout the entire excursion. It was a real pleasure listening to her and interacting with her. The logistical organization also deserves commendation: the bus service was excellent, comfortable, and punctual, proving to be a real strong point for fully enjoying the day without the stress of travel. The only aspect preventing me from giving the maximum 5-star rating concerns the description of included services. Unfortunately, some services mentioned as included in the package (specifically, the shuttle bus and the horse-drawn carriage to get up to Neuschwanstein Castle) turned out to require payment upon arrival, needing an extra cash outlay on site. I believe that, for greater transparency and fairness towards customers, it would be appropriate to update the tour description. Ideally, these services should either be removed from the list of inclusions or, even better, it should be clearly specified that they are additional costs to be paid in cash on-site. This would prevent unmet expectations and potential misunderstandings. Despite this minor issue regarding information, the overall experience was definitely worthwhile, and I would recommend this tour. The quality of the guide and the transportation was impeccable. For this reason, my rating is 4 out of 5 stars.

I appreciated a lot the kindess and care offered by Pedro, our guide. He is nice, professional and very precise. Also, he had an excellent word for everyone, gave precise indications and excellent information. He spoke in German, English and Spanish and was always at our disposal. I did however not appreciate the time at disposal at Linderhof Castle. We arrived at 10:15 a.m. on April 18th and had to be back at the bus at 11:10 a.m.. This was not even one full hour and we did not have sufficient time AFTER the guided tour of the castle to visit the gardens, take photos and walk around. Please consider to let more time at disposal for the tourists next time! Thank you!

We loved our guide, Amir Saad, that had so much passion for history! We had a rainy, foggy day but we made the best of it. We were SO disappointed that the castle tour was so brief. The castle guide should have had a light to shine or a red dot pointer to the things he was pointing out to us to look at. Paying $57.50 EU was a lot for a tour but we were afraid that we couldn't get into the castle after planning our whole trip around it so that part was worth it.

Great tour. Our guide, Amir was really nice, and great at getting people´s attention and interest them in the history of the castle. He has a really vast knowlege of subject to the very last detail. The overall tour is maybe a bit too long (3h) despite the fact that we can only be inside the castle for aprox. 30min. but it's a nice walk through the woods around it. The only negative thing is that after you leave the Headout tour and are inside the castle for the official tour you are treated like a sheep in a fast moving herd, getting hurried past rooms to alow for another paying mob to get in. Inside there is a no photo policy and the museum's security is really anoying and agressive trying to catch visitors taking sneaky photos. Threatening that they will be kicked out!

Neuschwanstein Castle of Bavaria | King Ludwig II’s Swan Castle

Perched high in the Bavarian Alps, the Neuschwanstein Castle was envisioned as a personal retreat for the ‘Mad King’ Ludwig II. The palace’s towering spires and swan motifs reflect the king’s fascination with medieval chivalry and Wagnerian operas. The castle’s fairytale-like architecture has inspired many, including Walt Disney, who modeled Sleeping Beauty’s Castle after it. Though King Ludwig never saw the castle fully completed, Neuschwanstein lives on, drawing millions of visitors every year.

Why visit Neuschwanstein Castle?

Why visit Neuschwanstein Castle?
  • Historical significance: Nicknamed ‘Mad King Ludwig’ for his eccentricities and lavish spending, King Ludwig II of Bavaria was a great patron of the arts. He commissioned the castle as a retreat from royal duties and a homage to the operas of Richard Wagner.
  • Scenic surroundings: The Disney Castle of Munich is perched on a rugged hill in the foothills of the Alps, overlooking the village of Hohenschwangau and the surrounding mountains. On a clear day, you can see across the Bavarian countryside for miles.
  • Fairytale castle comes to life: Neuschwanstein is the epitome of a Romantic fairytale castle with its turrets, towers, and colorful frescoes. Walking through the castle grounds feels like stepping into a world of knights, princesses, and dragons.
  • Cultural icon: The Neuschwanstein Castle has been featured in countless movies, and TV shows, and even inspired the design of Disneyland's Sleeping Beauty Castle, cementing its status as an iconic landmark.
  • Outdoor activities: The surrounding mountains are perfect for outdoor adventures like cycling and horseback riding. You can explore trails, visit the nearby Linderhof Palace and Hohenschwangau Castle, or simply stroll through the scenic countryside.

Things to know before booking Neuschwanstein Castle tickets

Located at the foothills of the Alps in the Swabia region of Southern Germany, Neuschwanstein is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Southern Bavaria.

  • Before diving into ticket options and how to choose the right ticket, it’s important to first understand the castle network. A visit to Neuschwanstein Castle opens up the possibility of seeing two other castles nearby: the Hohenschwangau and Linderhof Castles.
  • Neuschwanstein Castle is situated near the town of Hohenschwangau, just a few hundred meters away from Hohenschwangau Castle, the former home of Bavarian royalty. In fact, the Neuschwanstein ticket office is located at Hohenschwangau Castle, making it easy to visit both castles in one day. For a seamless experience, consider booking a Neuschwanstein guided tour that includes access to both.
  • Linderhof Palace, on the other hand, is about an hour’s drive from Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau Castles. With proper planning or a combo tour, you can easily visit all three castles in a single-day trip.

Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau Castles

  • An important detail about Neuschwanstein Castle is that entry to the palace and its rooms are only available through guided tours. If you wish to explore the castle's interiors, including its many rooms and artwork, ensure your Neuschwanstein guided tours includes access to the interior. Standard tickets only allow access to the castle grounds, where you can admire the exterior of the castle.
  • Neuschwanstein Castle is perfect for a day trip, with the journey from Munich to Hohenschwangau taking only about two hours. To avoid the hassle of arranging transportation, we recommend booking Neuschwanstein guided tours with transfers from Munich.
  • Most tours to Neuschwanstein Castle also include a visit to Mary’s Bridge, a nearby bridge known for its iconic view of the castle. Access to the bridge is free, but availability depends on weather conditions.
  • For a different experience, you can also book Neuschwanstein Castle summer tours, which allow you to explore the castle grounds and enjoy a bike tour around Hohenschwangau.
  • You may also want to consider horse-drawn carriage tours, which take you from Hohenschwangau Castle to Neuschwanstein Castle in traditional, old-fashioned carriages.

Linderhof Palace

  • We also recommend visiting Linderhof Palace, just 45 kilometers from Neuschwanstein. Our premium Neuschwanstein and Linderhof tours offer luxurious, air-conditioned cars, free Wi-Fi, and complimentary refreshments. If you plan to travel on your own, note that there is no direct public transportation between the two castles, so driving is the most convenient way to visit both in one day.
  • You can choose between bus or train transfers when booking Neuschwanstein and Linderhof day trip tickets. Between January and March, the weather can be unpredictable, making bus travel difficult. We recommend opting for train transfers if you're planning to visit during the winter months.

What’s inside Neuschwanstein Castle?

Inside Neuschwanstein Castle
  • Throne Room: This room features a magnificent throne for King Ludwig II, although he never occupied it due to his early death. The space is adorned with frescoes and ornate carvings, depicting scenes from Wagner’s operas.
  • Singers’ Hall: This hall is inspired by Richard Wagner's opera ‘Tannhauser’ and features frescoes that depict scenes from the legend of the minstrel-knight Tannhauser.
  • King’s bedroom: King Ludwig II's bedroom is a lavishly decorated space, featuring a canopied bed and ornate furnishings. It offers a glimpse into the king's living quarters and his affinity for luxury.
  • Queen’s bedroom: The Queen’s bedroom is also decorated with expensive artifacts, however, it is much more modest in comparison to King Ludwig II’s private quarters.
  • Grottos: Grottos are a unique feature of the Neuschwanstein Castle. They are artificial caves with indoor waterfalls and a small throne. King Ludwig II was often known to retreat to these spaces.
  • Dining room: As the name suggests, this is the room where King Lugwig II dined with his guests. The room is lined with decorative wood paneling and has large windows, bathing the inside in soft, warm hues.

Our tour of Neuschwanstein was excellent! Cansel, our tour guide, was a wealth of information, and very sweet. She really made the trip fantastic, and Tony, our bus driver, gave us a super smooth ride. We did notice some negative comments here that we feel require rebuttal. We saw someone complain that they paid more than some other people on the bus, and another complaint that the castle tour was not included in their ticket. We found it very clear that pricing was à la carte, with different available levels. We chose the bus transportation with skip the line tickets to both Neuschwanstein and Linderhof castles, but did not select the highest level that included drinks and snacks. So we were not the least bit bothered by the fact that people who did pay extra got food and drink, and we didn't, because we didn't pay for it (we did opt to pay for drinks on the bus, as they were available for purchase). Cansel could clearly see on our reservation that our tickets to both castles were included, and she provided them with no problem. Other people who were with us who had chosen not to buy those tickets in advance were able to pay on the bus. We see no problem with this, it was all very transparent, clear, and upfront. People complaining that they got less or paid more than someone else clearly didn't understand the booking process. We have zero complaint about how everything was handled, and had an amazing 10-hour tour that we will never forget.
